Year 8 Geography: from Culcheth to Antarctica!

Year 8 geography pupils took part in an exciting project to design a new flag for Antarctica back in December, learning about one of the world’s most important and fragile environments. The project encouraged students to think carefully about what Antarctica represents, including peace, science, teamwork, and the protection of nature. After many imaginative entries were submitted, two winning designs were chosen to represent Culcheth High School.

The winning flags have now officially made the incredible journey to Antarctica, where they were photographed against the breathtaking landscape aboard a research vessel. The flag will now be displayed at the British research facility in Antarctica, allowing scientists and visitors to see the pupils’ work. The image will serve as a lasting reminder of the students’ hard work and their connection to this unique continent. Pupils were thrilled to hear that their design had travelled thousands of miles to one of the most remote places on Earth.

The project also helped raise awareness of Antarctica Day, celebrated each year on 1 December. Antarctica Day marks the signing of the Antarctic Treaty in 1959, an international agreement promoting peace and scientific cooperation. It reminds people around the world of the importance of protecting Antarctica’s fragile environment for future generations.
