Following on from a great start to the football season for the Year 8 team, an away fixture in the 2nd round of the English Schools cup was their next major test. A highly rated Our Lady’s RC High School were the opponents on a wet and windy afternoon.

Culcheth got off to the worst possible start, conceding early on. For the next 10 minutes Culcheth had their backs to the wall and some heroic defending kept the score line at 1-0. Shortly before half time, captain Alex Hunt unleashed a fierce 20 yard free kick into the top corner to level the scores.

Early in the second half, another sucker punch, with Our Lady’s capitalising on a mix up in communication and took the lead with a well taken goal. Once again Culcheth showed their strength and character with half time substitute Louis Bimpson plucking the ball out of the air and lobbing the goalkeeper to equalise. Moments later, Connor McLeod Upton decided to replicate his captain and buried a free kick past the goalkeeper to take the lead for the first time in the game.

The tie was sealed with 10 minutes to go when pressure from Taylar Freaney led to a mistake from the opposition defence allowing Taylar to score the fourth.

Full time result: Our Lady’s 2 Culcheth 4. For such a young team, their desire to win and succeed is exceptional. All members of the squad played their part in a memorable victory.
