Ilias Hirani Worthington secured a place at the Great Britain 12/U National Championships in July by reaching the semi-final at the Scotland National Tour event and reaching a ranking of 16 in the GB. This is a tournament for the top 32 players in Great Britain. As a result, Ilias has had a very busy summer!
In preparation for the National Championships, he flew out to Barcelona to commence three weeks of intense training on clay courts. Each day began with an hour uphill bike ride through central Barcelona to the Tennis Academy, followed by hours of competitive play alongside many well-known professionals and young competitive players.
The Academy was incredibly beneficial as challenging heat is something that many British players must become accustomed to if they are to remain competitive. Ilias trained with many young top Spanish players, making friends and improving his Spanish along the way, as well as developing sustainable techniques and styles of play.
When he returned back home to the UK, his tournaments and competitions commenced almost immediately. He travelled to Bournemouth for the National Championship and Ilias played some great tennis in his singles but didn’t get the result he hoped for. However, Ilias fought hard and reached the quarterfinals of the Doubles narrowly losing out on a deciding match tie break 10-7.
The intensity of Barcelona and all his previous hard work and commitment had paid off, Ilias won a 16/u Competition. A great experience and great memories.
