One of the GCSE Drama set studies is ‘Blood Brothers’ by Willy Russell. The popular musical, which is set in Liverpool and tells the story of twins separated at birth, came on tour to Manchester and was the perfect opportunity for Year 10 to see the production before studying and completing a practical exam on the play.
On Wednesday 11th March, Miss Longden and Mrs Noneley took all 32 students in the GCSE class to the Palace Theatre. The cast, which included Maureen Nolan as Mrs Johnstone and singer Marti Pellow as The Narrator, were superb in their delivery of this very gritty and emotional musical. With very little knowledge of the plot or characters beforehand, students were amazed at the standard of performance from the actors and quality of the songs and stories – I don’t think there was a dry eye in the house when the tragedy was revealed at the end!
This will provide the students with a deeper understanding of the play before they do their practical exam in the summer so a very enjoyable and worthwhile experience.
