On Thursday 8th February, three Year 9 students attended the Youth Speaks District Heat at Statham Lodge in Lymm, hosted by Lymm Rotary Club. Youth Speaks is a public speaking competition in which students are required to speak in detail about a topic of their choice. Our students chose ‘The Role of Social Media in Society’ and, despite the inevitable nerves of speaking to a large audience, delivered a mature, well-prepared and thought-provoking speech.

Ruby Young, the team’s chairperson, captured the audience’s attention by discussing addictions and how an addiction to social media is becoming an increasing problem amongst millennials. Matthew Middlehurst, the team’s main speaker, then spoke eloquently about the topic – including some shocking statistics – but also about the benefits of social media. Finally, Caitlin Armstrong offered the team’s vote of thanks to the judges and summarised the team’s views enthusiastically and
passionately.

In total, there were five teams in the intermediate category – all of which gave interesting and diverse speeches. However, they were no match for the Culcheth High School team as, after the judges’ deliberation, it was announced that they were the winners of the District Heat.

The team took part in the District Final on Saturday 4th March and, despite not winning this time, the team performed brilliantly, with Caitlin Armstrong winning an award for the best in her role. The Youth Speaks team, along with Mrs Wilkinson, would like to thank Newton & District Jubilee Rotary for their support and guidance. We are incredibly proud of
the team for such a fantastic achievement.
