Culcheth High School leaver, Lucca Chadwick-Patel took part in the commemorative events to remember those who died at the
Somme. He wore the uniform of the 2
nd Battalion Gordon Highlanders.

Volunteers in uniform moved between and appeared at places throughout central and surrounding parts of Manchester as a
platoon of soldiers. They never spoke and, when approached, gave out various cards giving details of individuals who died on
the 1st July 1916.

Commissioned by 14-18 NOW, the UK’s Arts’ programme for the First World War centenary and created by Turner Prizewinning artist Jeremy Deller, in collaboration with Rufus Norris, Director of the National Theatre, each participant represented an individual soldier who was killed on 1st July 1916. The work is partly inspired by tales of sightings during and after the First World War by people who believed they had seen a dead loved one.
