As another academic year draws to a close, I thought it would be nice to look back over our highlights of the last year, in the hope that it might inspire even greater involvement and further successes next year!!
A really busy year saw all year groups finish in the top three positions in their respective leagues, with the Year 7 and Year 8 teams both finishing their campaigns as League Champions. Years 7, 8 and 10 also made it to the cup finals, with Year 7 triumphing to complete a great league and cup double.
Our main girls’ sport also saw great success this season, with the Year 7 and Year 8 teams also being crowned as Warrington League Champions. Adding further to this success was our Year 8 team, who won the Condover Hall Tournament. This is a national entry competition open to both school and club teams, so it’s an achievement that makes us really proud of the girls.
Interest in rugby has grown again this year, with school teams being fielded in both Year 8 and Year 10. Our Year 10s led the way this year, with a very respectable third place finish in the Warrington Champions. This paved the way for the greatest rugby league achievement in my 12 years at Culcheth………the Year 8 team being crowned Warrington Champions, defeating both Great Sankey and Beamont Academy on their way to claiming the title!!
A great year in Athletics has seen our Years 10 and 11 boys winning the Warrington team championship, and Conor Buttery, Dan Shields, Louis Twist-Green, Matt Pye, Noah Glennon, Shannon Campbell, Eva Patrick and Amelia Whalley all being crowned as Warrington champions in their individual and relay events. Still to come this year is our school sports day, on Tuesday 14th July at Victoria Park, in which I’m hoping to see strong, and potentially record-breaking, performances from these and our other top athletes. If you are available for this event, please come down and cheer on your son / daughter.
As mentioned earlier in this article, our students now hold both the Lancashire Team Championship, and the Girls Individual Stroke Play Championship, and (at the risk of cursing things) may even hold the National Team Championship by the time this article hits press!! Either way, simply qualifying for the National Final has been a fantastic achievement for Kirsty, Will and Matt, and anything beyond this will simply be a fabulous bonus.
Ski Trip 2016
We now have just four places left on our 2016 ski trip to Andorra. Almost every student who travelled with us in 2015 has signed up again, which certainly indicates to me that they must have had a great time, so if you are in any way interested, hurry up and grab one of these last few places. Full details can be downloaded from the school website, and hard copies are available from Mr Welsford and the PE staff, so act quickly and don’t miss out on this fantastic opportunity.
