Our Year 8 team recently participated in the Warrington Wolves rugby festival, in which they played against the traditionally strong rugby schools of Cardinal Newman, Beamont Academy and Great Sankey. A comfortable 5 tries to 2 victory over Cardinal Newman, was followed by a loss to Beamont, leaving us with a crunch game against Great Sankey.

Despite trailing 4-12 at one stage, the boys put in a great second half performance to score a last minute winner and overcome Sankey 20-16. This qualified them for a place in the final against Beamont at the Halliwell Jones Stadium, on 2nd June……….and what a performance the boys produced!!!!

Despite a slow start to the game, that saw us fall behind by 8 points, the boys steadily grew in confidence and by half-time a try from Isaiah Thorne-Marsh, followed by a James Collier conversion, saw us trailing by just 2 points. A second try from Thorne-Marsh, which was again converted by Collier, saw us take the lead early in the second half,
but Beamont scored almost straight from the restart, to leave the game tied at 12-12. Both sides then showed signs of nerves, as they spurned scoring chances that could have won the game, before Man of the Match Isaiah Thorne-Marsh completed his hat-trick of tries to give us a 16-12 victory.

This is a truly fantastic achievement for the boys, as it is the first time in over 12 years that a Culcheth rugby team has been crowned Warrington Champions, and it is certainly a deserved reward for all the hard work the boys have put in on the training pitch this season.
