In the last edition, I mentioned that our Year 7 Rugby team had qualified for the final of the Warrington Wolves 9-a-side rugby league competition, which was played at Victoria Park on Tuesday 10th May.

The game opened with the opposition scoring an early try, but we fought back to take an 8-4 lead through tries from Jacob Sherwin and Troy West. The game ebbed and flowed, with Newman scoring a second try to bring the scores level towards the end of the first half. Culcheth crossed the try line again in the final seconds of the half, but Jacob Bourdet’s effort was controversially ruled out for him having placed a foot in touch, so we headed into the half time break all square.

This turned out to be a pivotal moment in the game, as Newman scored a 3rd try early in the second half, to give themselves a 4 point lead. The boys put up a really spirited second half performance before eventually losing 8-16, but with Cardinal Newman only scoring their 4th try with the final play of the game, we really were right in the match until the very end.

Irrespective of the final result, the boys did themselves proud, and will have some great memories of playing in a final in front of a big crowd!
