I finished my previous football up date by telling you that our Year 7, 8 and 10 teams had won through to the Warrington Schools Cup Finals, so how did they get on??
Year 7 won 2-1 against Lymm High School, to finish their debut season as undefeated league and cup champions. Lymm were the only team that we failed to beat in the league this year, so we knew that the final was likely to be a tight affair. Goals from Tom Shepherd and Rees Allen gave us a two goal lead, before Lymm pulled one back with 5 minutes to play, to guarantee a nervy end to the game. But the boys kept their bottle, and successfully saw out the remaining time to cap off a great first season with a cup final victory!
In the Year 8 final, goals from Sam Oliver, Sam Tickle, Connor McLeod-Upton and Louis Thorpe had given us a relatively comfortable 4-2 lead against Bridgewater, before they pegged us back twice before full-time to take the game to penalties. A nail-biting shootout ensued, in which Bridgewater eventually ran out 10-9 winners – a horrible way to lose a trophy. That said, a clean sweep to finish as league champions, and the narrowest of defeats in a hugely exciting cup final certainly doesn’t rank as a poor season to me!
Year 10, I’m afraid, also lost their final, 1-2 against Great Sankey. Trailing 0-1 at half time, a great goal from Louis Twist-Green got us right back into the game at the beginning of the second half, but the boys just weren’t able to push on from that point, and fell behind again shortly after. Despite their best efforts, they just couldn’t find a way back into the game, and had to be content with their runners up medals.
