Culcheth High School Year 9 rugby team finally threw off the curse of losing in finals to claim the Sky Try 9s Warrington Schools Championship. The team led by Captain Jack Darbyshire, came into the final as clear underdogs due to already losing to Bridgewater at a qualifying event. However, on the day, despite the numerous obstacles they had to overcome (Warrington’s traffic gridlock!), they showed tremendous heart and passion to win the trophy by a comfortable margin.
Culcheth flew out the blocks and established an early lead, which throughout the game they never really looked like losing. A special mention has to go to Patrick Irwin and Tom Standish, who were both playing despite only being in Year 7 and 8 respectively. However, every single player deserves the recognition for showing their true ability and desire. They were an absolute credit to themselves and the school.
A final mention goes to George Russell, who was unfortunately injured in the lead up to the final, but played a significant role in helping the team on the day in relation to motivation and tactical advice.
Team: Jack Darbyshire (C), Troy West (VC), Tom Platt, Jacob Sherwin, Keith Newby-Stewart, Jacob Sergent, Jamie Reddicliffe, Josh Avery, George Russell, Patrick Irwin and Tom Standish.
